Many remote communities lack access to digital services. Telstra’s Digital Inclusion Strategy aims to provide all Australians with access to digital infrastructure and improve their ability to use digital products and services. This involves providing mobile base stations and broadband in remote communities along with mentorship programs designed to support digital literacy.
Culture Counts is proud to be working with Telstra to help measure the outcomes associated with greater digital inclusion in remote and indigenous communities. The use of online services including communication tools, information search tools, banking and online transactions, employment and training courses can generate many benefits for people, particularly in remote areas with limited physical service providers.
A selection of important outcomes include:
- Greater engagement and participation in the digital economy
- Greater confidence and peace of mind in making informed decisions about health or personal wellbeing
- Stronger relationships with family and people outside the community
- New perspectives, compassion and respect for other cultures
The project involves undertaking research and engaging in dialogue with communities around digital access, ability and use; working to identify and remove barriers to inclusion. The evaluation will increase awareness of the needs and desires of individuals and particular segments of communities, and highlight significant insights into the broader social and economic impacts of enhanced digital inclusion.
